Wisconsin turkey hunting has become a bi-annual tradition for many families in the great state of Wisconsin. Beginning in the late 1970’s the population of wild turkey in Wisconsin began to dwindle, which left loyal turkey hunters in despair. But in the early 1990’s the state DNR began a viable repopulation program through appropriate management that has left the overall turkey numbers soaring today.
Every year there are two basic hunting seasons, and that is spring and fall. Typically the spring season begins in Mid April, and then runs through the beginning of May. During this season the weather is just beginning to warm up slightly, allowing hunters to enjoy very crisp mornings in the outdoors. Later in the year the state allows a Fall Wisconsin Turkey Hunting Season that begins typically in late September running till mid November. This season gives each family the opportunity to procure a wild turkey for their Thanksgiving Dinner. As turkey hunters we all know how important it is to enjoy a meal revolving around tradition!
Wisconsin turkey hunting uses a Draw System at the state level to keep track of the overall well being of the turkey population throughout their lands. It is important to go to http://dnr.wi.gov/topic/hunt/turkey.html to verify that when the Draw application deadlines are for your area, the last thing you would want to do is miss it! Keep in mind that these dates change from year to year, so yearly verification is required.
